The Rillian Empire

The World of Langthil

Archmage Rillian I, founder of the Rillian Empire and its first Archmage (the title given to the ruler of the Empire, which is a mageocracy), rose to power by basically inventing Ritual Circles. Using this innovation, theoretically any number of casters can link their wills together, with the resultant willpower they are able to focus onto casting powerful spells being exponentially larger than what all of them combined could do on their own.

Rillian didn’t set out at first to use this to establish his own empire, though. He initially went to a few different kings and queens and offered his services and the secrets of his Circles (it’s a lot more complicated than simply drawing a circle and then linking hands) in exchange for a high-ranking position in their empire, essentially requesting that he be made an adviser to the king/queen him/herself. An insufferably arrogant man, however, the self-styled Archmage was rebuffed, oftentimes before he even gained an audience with the ruler.

Furious that his genius was being ignored, after being dismissed for the 6th time, Rillian gathered his few acolytes atop a small hill just outside the capital city he’d just been sent away from. There he performed the complex spells to initiate a Ritual Circle, and he and his acolytes began amassing so much power that witnesses report the hill itself was practically glowing, and even those without any magical talent could feel the tingle of raw magic accumulating around it. When Rillian and his acolytes finally released the energy they had built, they completely annihilated the castle and half the city.

That was when both Rillian and the world fully realized the military potential of Ritual Circles, and began the establishment and rapid growth of the new Rillian Empire, the unquestionably dominant power in the world.

At least until it was destroyed in a cataclysm so disastrous it practically erased an entire continent from the surface of the world. But that’s another story.
