The Guild

The World of Langthil

The Guild is a merchant’s guild, or rather it is the merchant’s guild. Its influence spans the entire eastern continent, reaching into every single nation. The Guild recognizes no nation as having authority over it, instead declaring itself fully sovereign. All trade between nations, or even between cities, is handled by the Guild; they also handle most trade between the smaller towns, but independent traders also work those routes.

Influence

The Guild’s almost complete control of trade gives them considerable influence, wielded most often through trade sanctions (or threat thereof). The Guild has managed to use this power on a number of occasions to stifle competition or win favorable legal status, although the side effects have occasionally been severe.

The most visible effect of their influence, however, is seen in the world’s currencies, and specifically in how they are exchanged: Rather than counting coins, coins of one metal are simply weighed against a standard unit of measurement called a “weight”. Merchants, especially those who regularly encounter the coins of different nations, will even price their wares in weights.
